Write An Album With Me – Part I

Some of you may already know, that alongside my metal band Disconnected Souls, I also have a gothic, electronic side project called Sensory Enigma. While writing the debut album for the latter, I thought it might be interesting if I share some of the journey with you.

Let’s start at the beginning – planning

The very first Sensory Enigma release was a cover of Eurythmics’ ‘Sweet Dreams’, followed shortly after by our first original single, ‘Doppelgänger’. These releases were unleashed back in 2020, two years ago now (wait really? two years already?).

I had always intended to write and release a full length album, and I wrote about 10 songs worth of lyrics with some progress made on the accompanying music for them. And then, as often happens, life got in the way and I lost motivation. Fortunately, creative energy for this project has returned and I’m determined to see this through – so much so that I’ve already announced the album will be out this year! By doing this it will hopefully keep me on track.

And so, I began writing in earnest, before Christmas, some new songs and revamping old ones. The direction I want to take the album in has changed somewhat. My compositional skills and creativity have expanded over the past couple of years. Some songs I have chosen to omit on the grounds of no longer feeling representative of me or what I want the project to be, but I will endeavour to perhaps use them elsewhere or maybe release in the future. I have also scrapped my previous album title idea – Unconscious Revolution. In some ways I still like it but it doesn’t fit quite right and I think I can come up with something a little more intriguing.

Getting down into the planning details, the new album will have 13 tracks (I like a good spooky cliché once in a while), this will include an intro and maybe some interlude tracks – that is still to be seen as I have finished all the songs yet! I’m aiming for a release in early autumn/ late summer which means I need at least three months in advance for PR. I’m hoping to have all the tracks sent off for mixing and mastering by the end of January to meet this deadline. I also need to commission album art, merch art, look into CD manufacturing, build up our socials further, ideally get new promo photos and potentially look at filming videos if not creating visualisers. All of this, on top of everything else I do… you don’t think I’m taking on too much?… Ah, it’ll be fine (she says).

So yes, this is the early stage I am at. I currently have 7 out 13 songs demoed, some almost complete which is not too bad as I’m writing this post on the 9th January. Let me know if this sort of content is interesting! I shall be sharing more up dates soon!
