The Story Behind Disconnected Souls’ ‘Petrichor’

Around October 2021 I decided, with my band mates at Disconnected Souls, that we would release a new original single the following month. It was a rush finishing the track in time for some promotion, but we did it and unleashed ‘Petrichor’ into the world.

Those of you who have followed our music for a while might have found this single to be rather unusual. It’s different from anything we have previously released and very different to our planned future tracks too.

So, to start with, if you’re wondering what petrichor is – here’s a definition:

Pronunciation: (British English) /ˈpɛtrʌɪkɔː/

A pleasant, distinctive smell frequently accompanying the first rain after a long period of warm, dry weather in certain regions. Also: an oily liquid mixture of organic compounds which collects in the ground and is believed to be responsible for this smell. [Petrichor, n., OED Online]

It’s a natural phenomenon that I personally love and have wanted to compose a song around for a long time. In early 2021, during the second – or was it the third lockdown(?), I spent some time developing my song writing skills and ‘Petrichor’ was born! It’s a theatrical, artsy, concept piece focusing on the Earth and nature. It delivers heavy, ‘djenty’ style guitars representing a thunderstorm, followed by a contrapuntal texture of orchestral and electronic instruments. It’s very atmospheric, experimental and a bit on the avant-garde side.

I’m very proud of the track, it’s the first release that has been predominantly my creation from composition to execution. I’ve pushed myself further than before with the song writing and with my vocal performance. I must say, I’m surprised at how much praise we have received for it! I thought it might be a bit too unusual for some. Oh well, we’ll just have the push more musical boundaries with our future releases haha!
