Part VII: The Long Nineteenth Century
As my chosen research covers texts released at various points throughout the Nineteenth Century, I thought creating a timeline may assist with recognising significant events that occurred alongside the publication of these texts.
The following are a small example of the major events that occurred throughout the Nineteenth Century, and may have influenced the literature produced in the period.
1789 – Beginning of the French Revolution
Matthew Lewis, The Monk 1796
1799 – End of the French Revolution
Mary Shelley, Frankenstein 1818
1837 – Queen Victoria’s reign begins
Edgar Allan Poe, ‘The Black Cat’ 1843
1845 – Irish Potato Famine begins
Robert Louis Stevenson, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde 1886
1897 – Women’s suffrage campaign gains momentum
Bram Stoker, Dracula 1897
